Lot Essay

Although usually thought of as an English tradition, particularly in the area of the North Pennines, spar box-making was also practised around the mines of continental Europe. Whilst engaged in their work, miners would often come across small attractive mineral specimens which they would collect and attach to the inside of wooden frames to form miniature grottos or dioramas.
