An unusual 19th-Century English standard measure,
a glass tablet lettered STANDARD SCALE OF BRITISH INCHES at temp. 68° Fah.t L. Casella fecit,London, 1868. N.o5 MATERIAL, = Plate Glass with a 6-inch scale subdivided to 0.05in., with a boxwood-mounted thermometer by J.M. BRYSON OPTICIAN EDINBURGH, kept in place by removable pine blocks, in a mahogany carrying case with two brass catches and handles -- 38cm. (15in.) wide, with two hand-written card notes, one saying that the scale was made for Professor Piazzi Smyth, Astronomer Royal for Scotland, the other describing the scale
