A mid 19th-Century French lacquered-brass universal equinoctial compass sundial,
signed Cam Rue de la Paix, 24. Paris, the silvered three-quarter chapter ring graduated IIII-XII, I-VIII on the upper surface and 4-12, 1-8 on the inside, with folding gnomon, the silvered folding latitude arc graduated 0-85°, the shaped horizontal plate with glazed compass with circumference scale, stamped initials, blued-steel edgebar needle and clamp, the plate further engraved with latitudes for Madrid, St Petersburg, Paris, London, Vienna and Rome, with two bubble-levels and three screw feet, the underside of the compass case engraved with the latitudes of twelve further cities including Peking, San Francisco, Havana and Cairo -- 12.1cm. (4¾in.) wide

Little is known of the French maker Cam. Marcelin has him working from around 1850, although information from the vendor's family puts the original purchase of this instrument at prior to 1847.
