A fine and rare mid 18th-Century French silver universal equinoctial compass sundial,
signed Langlois AParis aux Galleries du Louvre, the three-quarter chapter ring engraved IIII-XII, I-VIII on the upper surface and 4-12, 1-8 on the inside edge, with quarter-hour subdivisions, with sprung gnomon and discrete scroll decoration at the hinge and surrounding the notch for the folding latitude arm, graduated 0-76°, the octagonal horizontal plate with glazed compass with blued-steel needle and engraved with a circumference scale in four quadrants and french initials for sixteen compass points, the plate also with an attractive folding scroll-decorated plummet support with plummet and sprung catch, three adjustable screw feet, and engraved on the upper and lower surfaces and on the underside of the compass case with the latitudes of forty-seven international cities (see below), in a green plush-lined fishskin-covered case with two silver hooks and eyes and sprung catch (button missing) -- 10.1cm.
