AN OVERSIZE GOLD MOUNTED AGATE TABLE SEAL
The octagonal matrix cut with Royal Ducal arms with the Hanoverian arms in the centre, with chased scrolling foliate border, the body carved in black, grey and white banded agate with shaped octagonal handle and applied gold foliate band
4 1/8 in. (108 mm.) high
The arms are those of a son of King George III. While the cadency mark is unclear, it has been suggested that the arms are those of Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1771-1851). (2)

Lot Essay

Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland was the son of George III and Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. As a youth the prince underwent military training, reaching the rank of Colonel when he was still only in his twenties. He fought in the War of the First Coalition and commanded the 1st Brigade of Cavalry and then the combined British, Hanoverian, and Austrian forces. He lost his left eye during the Battle of Tourcoing in 1794.
