Lot Essay

Douglas, 8th Duke of Hamilton was the second son of James, 6th Duke of Hamilton and 3rd Duke of Brandon (1724-1758) and the famous beauty Elizabeth (d. 1790), 2nd daughter of John Gunning of Castle Coote. He succeeded his brother, James George, as 8th Duke in 1769 and in 1777 he raised the 82nd Regiment of Foot to fight in the American War of Independence. He married Elizabeth Anne (d. 1837), daughter of Peter Burrell of Beckenham. The steps to the dance 'Hamilton House' symbolise his infidelity to his wife whom he later divorced. He died without issue and was succeeded by his uncle, Archibald, as 9th Duke.
