4o (205 x 163mm). Title in red and black. Folding engraved allegorical frontispiece by Bernhard Söckler after Berghauer. Contemporary speckled sheep, spine decorated in blind (expert repairs to head and foot of spine, joints and corners). Provenance: Martin Bodmer (annotations); H.P. Kraus (booklabel).

FIRST EDITION of this polemic against Protestant Bible translations. The work, by a historian and controversialist theologian, represents an early example of Enlightenment Biblical criticism. The frontispiece represents all the heretical sects preparing to do battle with the 'true Catholic literal sense' of the Bible. In the foreground Luther beats a drum held by Melanchthon, representing the Luther Bible and his own interpretation. Graesse I, 340; NUC lists only two copies.
