Contemporary mottled calf, coat of arms of Charles de Sainte-Maure (Oliver 451) on covers and corners, spine gilt with the same coat of arms in the compartments (rebacked preserving original spine, corners restored); in a modern brown cloth slipcase. Provenance: Charles de Sainte-Maure, duc de Montausier (coat of arms); Joseph Niesert, pastor of Velen (inscription on title-page, dated 1821).
FIRST EDITION of this very rare and early bibliography of Bolognese writers. Montalbani was a philosopher, scientist and mathematician and is probably best known for his work on dendrology published as a supplement to Aldrovandi's works on natural history. From the library of Charles de Sainte-Maure whose wife Julie-Lucie acquired considerable fame as one of Louis XIV's mistresses. It was for her that Charles de Sainte-Maure composed the famous "Guirlande de Julie." Michaud XXIX, 445 ("petit ouvrage, rare et plein de recherches curieuses").
