FIRST EDITION. A very rare early publication on book collecting and librarianship. Capel enumerates the benefits of public libraries, and describes how to start, maintain and improve a public library. He praises libraries in Italy, France, England, Hungary as well as Germany and analyses the holdings of the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel by subject and number of volumes. Capel was according to ADB a Professor of History and Greek at the University at Hamburg, and published 97 works of which only 5 are in the British Library. STC/German 17th-century C-214 (lacking the portrait).
