CLESSIUS, Johannes (c. 1560-1599). Unius seculi eiusque virorum literatorum monumentis tum florentissimi, tum fertilissimi: ab anno dom. 1500 ad 1602 ... elenchus consummatissimus librorum. Frankfurt: Johann Saur for Peter Kopff, 1602.

4o (210 x 165 mm). (Some pale dampstaining and browning.) Nineteenth-century boards, morocco lettering piece (joints a bit rubbed).

"Although the grandiloquent title of this work claims it to be a general subject index of books published during the preceding century, it is in fact nothing but a new edition of the Collectio in unum corpus by Nicolaus Basseus of 1592 ... the digest of the Frankfurt Book Fair catalogues from 1564 onward, brought up to 1600, not 1602. Within these limits, and those imposed by the varying accuracy of the fair catalogues and the somewhat rough classification of the material, the work was a useful reference tool. The second part lists only German books; the first, those in Latin and other languages" (Breslauer & Folter 43).
