(Lacking blanks \kb\K4 and e4, light spotting or old dampstaining to first and last few leaves.) 19th-century half calf, covers blocked with the gilt arms of the Society of Writers to the Signet (worn, joints split). Provenance: Charles Lumsden (inscription dated 6 July 1593); Society of Writers to the Signet, Edinburgh (binding, sale 1 June 1995 lot 255 sold £1700 to Halwas).
THE FIRST BIBLIOGRAPHY OF PHILOSOPHY, printed from the Froschauer types. Very rare at auction: this is the only copy listed as having sold in the past thirty years. It lists 'some 1,500 philosophers and their works in chronological order from 2162 B.C. to the end of the fifteenth century; philosophers of the sixteenth century are listed by name only. A second part gives a useful bibliography of the Church Fathers down to the year 1140. the title emphasizes the work's usefulness for "bibliothecariis"' (Breslauer & Folter 34). Frisius (or Fries), a native of Zurich, was a preacher and teacher, and later a professor of philosophy and theology. He is perhaps best known for his Latin dictionaries, called the large and small Fries, which remained long in use. Adams F-1052.
