GESNER, Conrad. Bibliotheca instituta et collecta primum a Conrado Gesnero. Deinde in epitomen redacta & novorum librorum accessione locupletata, iam vero postremo recognita, & in duplum post priores editiones aucta. Edited by Josias SIMLER (1530-1576). Zurich: Christoph Froschauer, 1574.

2o (313 x 202 mm). Woodcut printer's device on title-page, decorative woodcut initials. (Title somewhat soiled, last leaf with marginal repairs, some occasional pale spotting.) Eighteenth-century German half sheep, spine painted white in the monastic fashion (some minor rubbing). Provenance: Hall, Franciscans (withdrawn inkstamp on title).

Enlarged and revised second edition of Gesner's Bibliotheca universalis (Zurich, 1545), "one of the epochal works in the annals of bibliography: the first 'universal' bibliography, that is, an international bibliography of authors who wrote in the learned languages, alphabetically arranged by their first names in accordance with medieval usage" (Breslauer & Folter 14, first edition). Josias Simler's enlargement almost doubles the size of the original work. Adams G-514; Besterman I, 459; PMM 73 (first edition).
