PEIGNOT, Étienne-Gabriel (1767-1849). Répertoire bibliographique universel. Paris: Imprimerie de Crapelet for Antoine-Augustin Renouard, 1812.

8o (220 x 133 mm). Interleaved. Original brown glazed boards, red morocco lettering-piece (front hinge cracked, worn). Provenance: GABRIEL PEIGNOT, the author's copy, with annotations by Peignot and Renouard (his sale Techener, 8 March 1852, lot 4,062).

FIRST EDITION, HEAVILY ANNOTATED BY ANTOINE-AUGUSTIN RENOUARD, PUBLISHER, BIBLIOGRAPHER, BOOKSELLER, and with some annotations in another hand, apparently that of Peignot. Totalling several thousands of words, the majority of the annotations and additions appear to be in the neater, slightly smaller hand of Renouard. Peignot too has added entries, and made corrections, sometimes independently of Renouard and sometimes in response to him. Notes are made throughout the book, including within the index.

Peignot's important bibliography is still of great use: it is the first bibliography with critical comments, also listing subject bibliographies and catalogues of public and private collections. This last category, with approximately 500 entries (pp. 75-135), is a valuable resource for the study of early catalogues. Breslauer & Folter 120 ("It is probably the most useful of many fine bibliographies by this prolific littérateur, some of which are on very esoteric subjects such as his brief list of books printed on colored paper"); Petzholdt p. 687; Taylor pp. 186-187.
