THE EARLIEST TYPOGRAPHICAL FACSIMILE OF AN ANCIENT MANUSCRIPT. The Medicean Codex of Virgil, written by Turcius Rufius Asterius in 494, is one of the oldest complete Latin manuscripts extant and among the most important survivals of classical literature. With the Vatican codices it forms the basis of our knowledge of the Aeneid and other Virgilian texts. The uncials were specially cut by Manni for Foggini's facsimile edition, including small characters to reproduce interlinear corrections. The irregular collation, with 16 cancelled folios, perhaps follows the original. ONE OF ABOUT TWELVE SURVIVING COPIES ON VELLUM. Van Praet, Vélins du Roi IV, 80.99; Birrell & Garnett 128.
