PRICED WITH BUYERS' NAMES BY WILFRED MERTON in pencil. Laid in is an article from the 15 May 1933 Daily Telegraph reporting that Wilfred Merton, acting as advisor to the British Museum, helped them secure through private treaty an eighth-century codex containing a unique text of the Carmen apologeticum of Commodianus from the Beatty collection. The preface to the first sale states that Chester Beatty's western manuscripts "are far too widely celebrated to require any lengthy introduction...Mr. Chester Beatty has brought together a collection which need fear no comparison, whether with contemporaries or with predecessors."
