Large 8o (285 x 200 mm), 4 volumes. LIMITED EDITION of 350 sets. Contemporary Kelmscott-style holland-backed boards [by Leighton], original printed wrappers bound in, edges uncut, (spines worn). Provenance: the author, who had this set interleaved and bound, and cut up and pasted in the entries from the four supplements (with numerous autograph notes, additions and corrections, bookplate) -- Alfred William Pollard (1859-1944), with autograph notes -- Victor Scholderer (1880-1971), with autograph notes, bookplate.
FIRST EDITION OF ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT PUBLICATION IN THE HISTORY OF INCUNABLE STUDIES, both practically and methodologically. Incunabulists continue to use it daily beside Hain, BMC, GW and ISTC. This set was bought privately by Bernard Breslauer after Victor Scholderer's retirement from the Museum. ASSOCIATION COPY, combining the notes of the British Museum's three greatest bibliographers, on hundreds of pages.
