WÜRDTWEIN, Stefan Alexander (1719-1796). Bibliotheca Moguntina libris saeculo primo typographico Moguntiae impressis instructa hinc inde addita inventae typographiae historia. Augsburg: Christoph Frederich Bürglen, 1787.
4o (224 x 180 mm). 9 engraved plates. Nineteenth-century boards (a bit worn). Provenance: E.H. Heiliger (signature on pastedown); J.B. Karl Koch (signature dated 1896 on pastedown).
FIRST EDITION of "a work of great interest on the origin of printing...The author treats with considerable minuteness of the genealogy of Gutenberg, of Fust, and of Peter Schoeffer, and engraves their arms and crests. He has copied, with the utmost veri-similitude, the colophons of all the early Mayence editions to which he could obtain access. Especially admirable is his facsimile of portions of the Psalter of 1457, which reproduces in exact size all the peculiarities of the original, as well as the system of abbreviation and punctuation adopted. Hessels ('Gutenberg') makes repeated references to this work and shows its untrustworthiness in several places" (Bigmore & Wyman II, 100).
