8o (178 x 116 mm). Collation: \kp\K2 (1 blank, 2r title), A-S2 (text). 72 leaves. Woodcut headpiece. BOUND BY HIPPOLYTE DURU FOR VICOMTE DE JONGHE D'ARDOYE, stamp-signed H. Duru and dated underneath in red ink "6 aout 1840": blue morocco gilt, the viscount's arms on sides, lettering on spine, roll-tooled turn-ins. Provenance: vicomte T.A.J.H.G. de Jonghe d'Ardoye (binding), author of Armorial belge du bibliophile (1930) -- Robert Hoe (bookplate, 1912 Anderson sale, Part IV, lot 1317) -- Willis Vickery (bookplate, 1933 Anderson sale).
FIRST EDITION, privately printed and LIMITED TO VERY FEW COPIES. Gauffecourt, whose attempt to seduce Rousseau's compagne, Thérèse Levasseur, is immortalized in Confessions, wrote this FIRST FRENCH MANUAL ON BOOKBINDING in 1737. Apart from two manuscripts, only three copies of the edition have been located: private collection (ex-Munby), Dijon public library, Geneva public and university library. The Breslauer copy was extra-illustrated by vicomte de Jonghe with 3 engraved plates and a letterpress "Explication" from the quarto edition of Description des Artes et Métiers (Neuchâtel: 1771-83). The date for this binding pushes back the start of Duru's independent activity by three years. J.P. Chalmers & E.B.
