MARIUS-MICHEL, Henri (1846-1923). Souvenir d'une petite polémique entre un bibliophile et un relieur. [Paris, 1912-1913].

220 x 160 mm. Autograph manuscript (4 pp.) and journal cuttings (mounted on 19 pp.) on paper. 14 double-page plates of binding reproductions (Thouvenin, Duplanil, Simier). Original marbled wrappers. Provenance: the author (bookplate).

Illustrated polemic conducted between Marius-Michel, binder, and Henri Béraldi, collector, in the journal La Reliure, about the relative merits of Romantic bindings of the Restoration (Béraldi) and contemporary binding (Marius). As in most polemics, both sides seem convincing, but it is hard not to sympathize more with the brilliant innovator than with the conservative bibliophile.
