The most outstanding feature of Mrs. Whitney Hoff's book collection was her splendid series of bindings from the fifteenth to the twentieth century, including three Groliers. Born in 1862, she was the only daughter of an immensely rich self-made man, David Whitney who claimed direct descent from the Plantagenets and from William the Conqueror. At the age of thirty-eight she married J.J. Hoff, executive of the Standard Oil Company in France. From then on she lived in France, in two châteaux and a hôtel particulier, devoting her wealth to various good works. Boinet was a bibliographer who made a specialty of the history of bookbindings; he contributed a number of articles to the Gutenberg-Jahrbuch. (2)
