WOTTON, Thomas -- MOSS, William E. [The English Grolier: a catalogue of books in gold-tooled bindings from the library of Thomas Wotton]. Worth: Manor House Press, 1942.

4o. Without title-page or index leaf. 13 plates, captioned in pencil. (A few stains.) Plum buckram, gilt-lettered spine label, top edges gilt. Provenance: J.R. Abbey (bookplate, his sale Sotheby's, 19 October 1970, lot 2758); J. Erle Drax (bookplate).

ONE OF ONLY FIVE KNOWN COPIES, of a very small edition, possibly only half a dozen. According to the Abbey sale catalogue: "The British Museum and Bodley each have a copy, one was in the collection of the late J.B. Oldham, another is in a private English collection. No two copies are alike." Bound at the end is a typed letter signed from Moss (2 pages, 4to, dated 1950), explaining the complex circumstances surrounding the production of the work at his private press during wartime. For a note on the book, see Bodleian Quarterly Record, V, no. 3, July 1955, p. 161.
