WOLFFHEIM, Werner (1877-1930). Musikbibliothek Dr. Werner Wolffheim. Berlin: Martin Breslauer and Leo Liepmannssohn, 1928-1929.
4 parts in 2 volumes. 4o. 89 plates. Bound for Martin Breslauer by Heinrich in blue morocco, outer gilt floral rolls, panelled spines gilt, olive morocco lettering pieces, t.e.g. original wrappers bound in.
LIMITED EDITION, one of 5 copies with wide outer margins of the catalogue of the musical library of Werner Wolffheim, with an original photograph of him added to volume one. "The elaborate and well illustrated auction catalogue has become a standard work of bibliographical reference... the most important auction of its kind in the 20th century" (Albi Rosenthal in New Grove Dictionary). This was largely due to Martin Breslauer who was able to persuade his more cautious and economically minded partner in this venture, Otto Haas, owner of the firm of Liepmannssohn, that a bibliographically more detailed and typographically more elaborate catalogue, than the latter had planned, was called for. Wolffheim was originally private tutor to the young Victor Manheimer, who himself was to become a collector of note. Wolffheim married his widowed mother Betty, considerably older than him, bur surviving him at least till 1937 (when Dr. Breslauer visited her at the Hotel am Kurfürstendam, Berlin). Her fortune enabled him to form his collection; their marriage was extremely happy. Inserted a signed note from Wolffheim to Martin Breslauer, dated May 13, 1930, and Wolffheim's obituary notice of October 1930. The indices do not form part of the original catalogue, but were privately produced by computer by Tilman Bassenge, Berlin, c. 1990, on bright yellow paper.
