An autograph letter, signed, from Joan Baez to Marlon Brando, dated 30 January, 1968, the two-page letter asking for Brando's help with her current project, an Institute for Non-Violence, the letter begins Dear Marlon, Read for a minute - Since I met you and we chatted and saw each other for the first time, I've continued on the same path I was flying then. Every once in a while, when I've felt very low, and prayer or records or walks haven't lifted the restlessness + boredom + sadness, I've tried calling you on the phone, knowing you would joke, flatter, and jive a little...but you're always on some other planet..., Baez explains the reason for her letter: I've found the active counterpoint for my Institute for Non-Violence...When I came out of jail the first time, I felt that for the first time since I'd been involved in active non-violent politics (almost 10 years), a small social step had been taken...I think that the October jailing of 150 of us, and then the Dec jailing of 280 of us, plus the extraordinary strides taken by this resistance group...the return of over 3000 draft cards etc... I have felt a change for the better in what I would call our "social atmosphere"... I should tell you that if you write out a check to "The Resistance" you might be called some kind of accomplice..., the letter finishes Maybe you're sitting on a beach somewhere in the islands, dig it, Marlon, we may not have long...kiss some women, have some children, lose some weight and send us some money..., signed Thank you and much love, Joan Baez, 2pp.
