The Ugly American, 1963
A collection of material relating to The Ugly American, including:
- Brando's working script, revised final script dated 22 February, 1962, 120pp. of mimeographed typescript, with yellow paper covers, the pages annotated extensively in Brando's and an unknown hand in various inks with notes and observations on the script, storyline and characterizations, including:
- p. 34: Brando has clarified some amendments he has made to Macwhite's speech on the opposite page I would like to interrupt here. So far the only thing that's clear is that there is nothing clear at all. So we'll stop squabbling and I'll present you with some facts.;
- p. 43: a whole section of the script crossed out in red pencil and replaced with Old Buddy, I really had a snoot-ful today and I just ain't up to it, I just want to have a toddy and laugh at your silly face;
- p. 51: amendments to Macwhite's speech written out on the opposite page: I don't know, some of the things you were saying kept flapping back at me out of the night. Maybe it was the drinking/booze, maybe what happened to me at the airport, but they all seemed so sinister...;
- approximately 26 black and white publicity stills of Marlon Brando as Ambassador Harrison Carter MacWhite, all -- 10x8in. (25.4x20.3cm.);
- a quantity of mimeographed typescript paperwork, including approximately 17pp. of shooting schedules, 10pp. of scene breakdowns, and 73pp. of continuity breakdowns;
- a book The Ugly American, New York: Crest, April, 1963; and related material (a lot)
