Mutiny On The Bounty, 1962
Two working scripts, both with blue paper covers stamped Temporary Incomplete, including:
- one script dated 5 July, 1960, 142pp. of mimeographed typescript (starting at p. 148), with approximately 54 pages annotated in Brando's hand in blue ballpoint pen with notes and observations on the script, storyline and characterizations, including:
- p. 175: Let's not have it the reason why they have to leave, keep it in one dimension, don't split the drama's positive ideal. If he believes his Chief more touching;
- p. 186: ...don't make Polynesians image diffused
- p. 193: better scene, poss drama of find island or not
- p. 216: Drought hard to swallow. #this discussion has nothing to do with issue anyhow. #we are trying hard here to create conflict where there is none;
- p. 228: Must relate this part of story to past...Through Mutiny, why Christian chose it. Couldn't accept principles of tyranny;
- p. 252: Christian is weak here;
-p. 277: we must have a broader canvas than the destruction of a society by a band of vandals;
- one script dated 16 August, 1960, 159pp. of mimeographed typescript, with approximately 58 pages similarly annotated in Brando's hand, including: :
- p. 7: could be scene of flirtation [between Christian and Lady Byam];
- p. 10: let us discover Bligh's stingyness, illwill gradually, more interesting, should be witty, gay...
- p. 12: should we start with tension or build to it bet. B + C;
- p. 25: this is open assault on Bligh, it;s a bitter reason all too soon in the story;
- p. 34: Let's see and hear what we haven't heard before - 1 dimension characters of good and evil all shop-worn and boring, color in sharacter!;
p. 76: Let's see and hear what we haven't heard before - 1 dimension character of good and evil are shop worn and boring - color in character!;
- p. 80: Bligh must not be gratuitously cruel, let us smell the mutiny. Build it...there is no contest if Bligh is such an implaceable [sic] liar + not believeable that he would expect Christian to sign;
- p. 82: we should have Bligh have some conflict about his cruelty...;
- p. 118: # theme if individuals are not responsible in a democ. it won't work! # Men given freedom is not enough, # Education has little to do with it... #Change your ideas or die. Men prefer death (2)
