FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Benchley on front flyleaf: "for Bob Kriendler- who brought up- and shepherded - three generations of Benchleys, fondly, Peter Benchley." Bob Kriendler was member of the Kriendler family, who owned the famous literary haunt, the 21 Club in New York City. The inscription refers to his father, novelist Nathaniel Benchley, and his grandfather, humorist Robert Benchley. The book was the basis for the classic Steven Spielberg movie of the same name, starring Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider, and Robert Shaw. The movie was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. A FINE COPY, the black jacket virtually unrubbed.
