FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with "flees" for "fleas" on p. 100. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY BUCK on the half-title: "To Mrs. H. Kanti This book is inscribed by Pearl S. Buck 'It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness'--Chinese proverb"; below which is stamped with Buck's Chinese character signature stamp in red. Buck won the 1938 Nobel Prize for Literature largely based on the success of this book. The Good Earth won the Pulitzer Prize, became a successful motion picture, and was awarded the Howells medal of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
