Original buckram (spine slightly darkened); pictorial dust jacket (some chipping and a few small tears along edges, slightly darkened); quarter morocco folding case with onlay based on the image from the dust jacket and "Ox-Bow" in wooden letters along spine. Provenance: Alyce Couch Conton (presentation inscription).
FIRST EDITION, IN THE FIRST STATE DUST JACKET, with the Random House bookmark still attached and with the list of "Thrillers" on the rear flap. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Clark: "For Alice Couch Conton -- Davies missed, but I still think he had the idea -- it's in us. Walter Walter V.T. Clark Sept. 25, 1940." Clark's novel of the West was the basis for a 1943 film starring Henry Fonda, Anthony Quinn, Henry Morgan, and Jane Darwell. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.
