CUMMINGS, Edward Estlin (1894-1962). The Enormous Room. New York: Boni & Liveright, 1922.

8o. Original brown cloth; original dust jacket (expertly restored with a few chips renewed, lined on verso with green paper); imaginative cloth slipcase; Raymond Epstein (his sale, Swann Galleries, 29 April 1992, lot 104).

FIRST EDITION of the author's first book. SIGNED by Cummings on the front free endpaper. Cummings's first book, a novel about his experiences as a prisoner of war in World War I, is the cause of some book-collecting legend with relation to the offending word "shit" in the last line of p.219. It was widely believed that Boni & Liveright inked out the word in most copies, but in reality the publisher was not especially committed to making the emendation. This copy uncensored on p. 219, with the four-letter word in the last line untouched. Firmage A1.
