Original gilt-lettered dark blue cloth (very light rubbing to joints and extremities, some minor soiling); quarter morocco folding case with onlay depiction of Holmes smoking a pipe. Provenance: A George Reid Gibb (ownership inscription in endpaper); Richard Manney (bookplate, his sale, Sotheby's, 11 October 1991, lot 118).
FIRST ENGLISH EDITION IN BOOK FORM, with four pages of publisher's advertisements. "The author was persuaded to revive Sherlock Holmes by the generous offers made by the proprietors of the American magazine...No conditions were attached. He replied on a postcard: 'Very well.
