FIRST EDITION with the inserted advertisement in vol. I demonstrated by Carter to be a later insertion, but without the final leaf Z6. This copy also includes the 16-page advertisement at the end of vol. III. Eliot began The Mill on the Floss in 1859, soon after the publication of Adam Bede. The work was finished in March 1860, and between its publication in April and the end of May, 6000 copies were sold. Sadleir I, 816; Wolff 2060.
