Original brown cloth, stamped in blind, spine gilt-lettered (very slight wear at ends of spine and fore-corners, a few pale spots on cloth, spine slightly cocked, otherwise fine and bright); imaginative half morocco folding case with cloth onlaid design. Provenance: J.H. Morison, presumably the author John Hopkins Morison (pencil signature on front flyleaf); Robert S. Morison (ink note beneath above signature: "Robert S. Morison, from his father's library, 1879").

John Hopkins Morison, was an author and contemporary of Hawthorne's, who became a Unitarian minister and held pastorates in New Bedford and Milton, Mass. He was editor of the Monthly Religious Magazine, and was a frequent contributor to current denominational literature. BAL 7604; Clark A17.1.a.
