FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Herlihy to the American author, William Goyen: "For Bill -- Affection and Admiration, always. Jim Herlihy July 9, 1965 New York." A wonderful association copy additionally signed by Goyen above the presentation. Herlihy's novel became the basis for the 1969 movie starring Dustin Hoffman as Ratso and John Voight as Joe Buck. When it was first released, Midnight Cowboy was rated "X" because many found the film's nudity and it's stark portrayal of prostitution and homosexuality to be shocking. It became the only X-rated film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. Later, the film was re-evaluated and given an "R" rating.
