Original gray cloth (some minor fading); pictorial dust jacket (some minor darkening and soiling, minor chipping at extremities); quarter morocco folding case with a needlepoint image of Sheba on the front cover and a miniature ceramic likeness of Sheba attached to the spine. Provenance: Stanley Paul Bigelow and Jordan Masse (presentation inscription).

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Inge on the front endpaper: "To Paul & Jordan from William Inge." Inge's play became the basis for a 1952 film starring Shirley Booth and Burt Lancaster. Booth, who also starred in the stage version of the play, won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of a lonely wife whose husband blames her for his failings and who longs for the affection of her lost dog.
