FIRST EDITION. A SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPY, SIGNED BY KEROUAC AND WITH INSCRIPTIONS BY NINE BEAT FIGURES. Kerouac signs his name on the dedication. LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI signs on the pastedown, facing the front free endpaper alongside a fine cast of associates: JOHN MONTGOMERY (who appears in the novel as Morley, "I vouch for the handwritings in the book..."), WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS, STEVE ALLEN and ALLEN GINSBERG: "Allen Ginsberg 'Art is shapely, Mind is shapely.' 10/7/89." Ginsberg provides a lengthier inscription on the list of author's works facing the title: "Kerouac wrote fiction, so the prototypes of his Characters are not identical w reality; However the spirit of meditation is common. Allen Ginsberg 10/12/90 A-H." Ginsberg appears in the novel as Alvak Goldbook. GARY SNYDER inscribes above this inscription by Ginsberg, signing using the name of Japhy Ryder, his character's fictional name: "Truth? Fiction? Ah, no Matter. What is history anyway. Story-telling and some traces. Best wishes, Japhy Ryder 2 .XI-90." It is further signed by MICHAEL MCCLURE (half-title), Kerouac's bio-bibliographer ANN CHARTERS (rear flyleaf) and KEN KESEY.
A BOOK RARELY FOUND SIGNED OR INSCRIBED. According to American Book Prices Current, only the copy of The Dharma Bums inscribed by Kerouac to his mother has appeared at auction (The Library of Roger Rechler, Christie's New York, 11 October 2002, lot 181). No other copies of Kerouac's fourth novel, either signed or inscribed, appear in auction records. The novel covers the period of 1955-1956, on the West Coast and in North Carolina. THIS REMARKABLE COPY IS INSCRIBED BY THE PRINCIPAL PEOPLE ON WHICH KEROUAC BASED HIS FICTION. Charters A4a.
