LAWRENCE, David Herbert (1885-1930). Women in Love. New York: Privately Printed for Subscribers Only, 1920.

8o. Original blue cloth (spine lightly faded, some minor rubbing); quarter morocco folding case with onlays. Provenance: ownership inscription on front endpaper.

FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 1007 of 1250 copies (numbered in red ink). This copy is Roberts' variant (1), SIGNED BY LAWRENCE on the title-page. "In a letter to Edward McDonald dated September 1924, Thomas Seltzer wrote that Lawrence had autographed '16 or 18 copies' of this edition" (Roberts, p. 40). Although one of Lawrence's most popular novels, he initially had trouble finding a publisher. The final version of the manuscript was finished in 1916, but Lawrence had to wait almost five years before it was privately published in New York. EXTREMELY RARE SIGNED VARIANT: according to American Book Prices Current, over the past thirty years, only the Jonathan Goodwin copy with this variant has appeared at auction when it sold in 1977. Roberts A15a.
