Maugham thanks Kemp for a gift of figs and discusses the main character in the novel: "Yes, the story of Strickland was founded on that of Gauguin, but of course I was trying to write a novel and took any liberties I chose. I am surprised that you were not able to get the book mentioned in my footnote, since it is a purely imaginary work I invented for the occasion. After all one must not be too serious all the time in this life. Yours sincerely, W. Somerset Maugham."
