MILLER, Henry (1891-1980). Tropic of Cancer. New York: Grove Press, 1961.
8o. Original publisher's quarter morocco and marbled boards, t.e.g.; custom quarter morocco folding case with onlaid cloth and leather design based on the 1934 first edition wrapper design. Provenance: Karl Shapiro (1913-2000), poet and author (signed on front free endpaper).
KARL SHAPIRO'S COPY OF THE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF MILLER'S MOST IMPORTANT WORK. LIMITED ISSUE, number 3 of 100 hors commerce copies specially bound and signed by Miller. Shapiro provided the introduction for the first American edition, which Miller considered the only critical assessment in English to have done justice to his work. Shapiro's essay "Henry Miller: The Greatest Living Writer" originally appeared in the periodical Two Cities. Miller felt Shapiro's essay would "hit like a bomb" and pave the way for appreciation of his work. Tropic of Cancer was originally published in 1934 in Paris by the Obelisk Press, but it had been banned in the United States for 27 years until this publication. AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATION COPY.
