FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY inscribed by Porter on the half-title: "For Tom Kochery From Katherine Anne Porter 20 April 1976 'It doth make a difference whence cometh a man's joy.' St. Augustine -- Confessions." Porter's novel about a ship of passengers traveling from from Mexico to Europe was the basis for a 1965 film starring Vivien Leigh, José Ferrer, and Lee Marvin.
