Large 8o. Original red cloth (some dampstaining, spine faded, some light wear at extremities); dust jacket (spine lightly faded, some minor wear along folds and at edges); cloth folding case. Provenance: Ann Watkins (presentation inscription).

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY RAND TO HER FORMER LITERARY AGENT ANN WATKINS: "To Ann Watkins -- in memory of a past that had been very nice -- Ayn Rand May 5, 1943." Watkins had been Rand's literary agent and friend from 1934-1941. Watkins was given the first three chapters of The Fountainhead to shop around to various publishers. After a series of rejections, she and Rand had disagreements over the novel and its contents, so Rand fired her in 1941. Later that year, Rand was successful in selling the novel to Bobbs-Merrill using the first three chapters that had been previously passed around by Watkins. AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY OF RAND'S CLASSIC NOVEL. The Fountainhead was made into a 1949 film starring Gary Cooper.
