FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Crouse on the front endpaper: "To Jean and Ted our angelic 'angels' + Russel." The musical play was first performed at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City in 1959 with Mary Martin playing Maria. The classic film version was released in 1965 starring Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Captain von Trapp. The film was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning five of them including Best Picture.
