SCREENPLAY OF SOUTHERN'S "CANDY." INSCRIBED on the title: "To Frank, in hopes that you will remember to cast our pic in a credible manner--i.e. no wags or other exotics to play our heroine--only prime Grade A girls from the U.S. of A! Hopefully yours, Terry Southern." This 136-page screenplay appears to be an early version, as a longer (148-page) screenplay is known to exist; it is labeled "First Draft" in the typescript on the title. The screenplay was credited to Buck Henry, then best known for writing Get Smart and The Graduate, making this most likely one of the earliest version, entirely adapted by Southern. Ewa Aulin was cast for the leading role, accompanied by an all-star cast: Marlon Brando, Richard Burton, Ringo Starr, James Coburn, John Huston and Walter Matthau. Southern adapted his novel, written with Mason Hoffenberg, for the screen. Candy, Southern's satirical take on Voltaire's Candide, was originally published in France in 1958, confiscated and banned for its sexually explicit content. Christian Marquand directed, produced by Robert Haggiag.
