VERNE, Jules (1828-1905). Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas. Translated from the French. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1873 [actually 1872].

8o. Frontispiece and illustrations. Original green cloth stamped in gilt and black, spine gilt (textblock cracked); quarter morocco folding case.

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. This edition differs from the more common George M. Smith edition in the jellyfish vignette on the cover, the final 's' in 'Seas' lacking from the titles on the cover, and the mostly identical collation to the London edition. Verne's novel was the basis for the 1954 Walt Disney film starring James Mason, Peter Lorre, and Kirk Douglas. EXTREMELY RARE: there are only about 15 to 20 copies of this true first American edition known to exist, with speculation that most were destroyed in the Great Boston Fire, which occurred in the same month as publication. COVERS VERY FINE AND BRIGHT.
