Provenance: ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE (presentation inscription from the author); anonymous owner (sold, Swann Galleries, 15 April 1982, lot 202); Miss Frances H. Jones (sold, Christie's New York, 7 October 1994, lot 217).

Fourth Edition of Leaves of Grass, greatly revised and bound as issued with Drum-Taps, Sequel to Drum-Taps, and Songs Before Parting (comprising BAL's Issue 1--no priority). PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY WHITMAN TO SWINBURNE at the head of the title-page: "Algernon Charles Swinburne, from Walt Whitman." Swinburne was a long-standing admirer of Leaves of Grass and a staunch supporter of Whitman in England, describing him as "one of the great geniuses of our time" and including the celebratory ode "To Walt Whitman in America" in his own Songs before Sunrise (1871).
