The finely cast case in the form of a cloud-borne double scroll surmounted by a figure of Diana attended by two putti below, the cream enamel dial signed Jean Baptiste Baillon with ormolu hands, blue and black Roman and Arabic chapters with gilt fleur-de-lys half hour intermarkers, the movement with four back-pinned baluster pillars, single going barrel with ratchet and click on the backplate, later anchor escapement, pull quarter repeat on a bell via two hammers, the pull rope threaded through rollers secured to the back of the case, the repeat spring pulley mounted on the backplate signed J B Baillon Paris 1368

Lot Essay

Jean-Baptiste Baillon was one of France's most celebrated clockmakers of the 18th century. He was Master in 1727 in Place Dauphine, clockmaker to Queen Leczinska and from 1751 he was Court clockmaker to Marie Antoinette. He died in 1772 having produced a large number of high quality clocks and watches, examples of his work can be found in the Musée des Arts et métiers, Paris and the Science Museum, London
