Lot Essay

The present clock was almost certainly originally designed as a travelling alarm clock. The hook at the back of the case indicates this was probably its original purpose. It would seem that later in the early 19th century the present slender and well proportioned case was made for it - quite probably because it had been superceeded by a more practical and fashionable balance wheel carriage clock.
