The ewer, mark of Manuel Roque Ferrão, Lisbon, circa 1740, the basin, Oporto, circa 1760, mark IRC conjoined probably for Joa Rodrigues da Costa Negreiros
The ewer, fluted helmet-shaped on slightly domed shaped circular foot, the lower body and foot applied with strapwork and shell motifs, and below the rim with a floral and scroll cartouche issuing from a grotesque mask, the moulded rim chased below with diaperwork and foliate scrolls, the scroll and bracket handle with husks and strapwork and with crowned demi-female finial, marked under base, the basin, shaped oval with partly fluted well, the border repoussé and chased with a band of scrolling foliage, shells and flowers, a similar border below, marked on reverse
