A Queen Anne silver mug
Mark of Benjamin Pyne, London, 1699, Britannia standard
Slightly tapering cylindrical, on collet foot, with reeded and moulded borders, the beaded scroll handle with foliate cut-card work lower terminal, the front engraved with a crest within foliate strapwork mantling, the upper border engraved with a presentation inscription, the base engraved with initials 'T*M', marked on rim
4¼in. (10.8cm.) high
9oz. (306gr.)
The inscription reads, 'The Gift of Tho: Mansell to his Godson & Nephew Tho: Mansell born 3 jan: 1699/1700'

Lot Essay

This mug appears to be the cup mentioned in The History of the Family of Maunsell-Mansell-Mansel, 1920, Vol.2 p.627 in which it is stated that Thomas Mansell was baptised 10 January 1700, married 14 February 1733 and was buried 30 April 1746. His uncle is shown as Thomas Mansell (1681-1719).
