MARK OF GEORGE GARTHORNE, LONDON, 1690
Details
A William and Mary silver tobacco-box
Mark of George Garthorne, London, 1690
Oval, with reeded and rope-twist borders, the hinged cover chased with a coat-of-arms within crossed plumes, the reverse engraved with initials, marked on side and inside cover
3 5/8in. (9.2cm.) long
5oz. (176gr.)
The arms are those of Blackburne with a cadency mark for the third son, possibly for Jonathan Blackburne (1646-1724/5), fourth son of Thomas Blackburne (1604-1663) of Orford near Warrington who was himself a third son when the arms were granted. Jonathan Blackburne had three sons; his second son, John (1694-1786), his eventual heir, was a noted horticulturalist. It is also possible that the tobacco-box belonged to Lancelot Blackburne (1658-1743), Archbishop of York, who was known to have his attendants bring him pipes and tobacco into the Vestry when conducting a visitation in St Mary's Church, Nottingham.
