This and the following lot are after Bernini's famous sculpture executed in 1622-5 for Cardinal Scipione Borghese in Rome, and still at the Villa Borghese. The present lot and the following three were drawn during Stefano's second trip to Rome, in 1651-4. A drawing after the Medici Venus, a famous sculpture then exhibited at the Villa Medici in Rome, is in the Louvre (F. Viatte, Dessins de Stefano della Bella, Paris, 1974, no. 300).
